Gnosticism is an ancient religious and philosophical movement that claimed secret knowledge (gnosis) as the path to salvation.
It viewed the material world as evil or inferior, created by a lesser deity, and taught that the true God is pure spirit who can be known only through special insight.
Early forms of Gnostic thinking threatened the New Testament church, and the apostles wrote against its core errors.
Scripture answers Gnosticism by affirming the goodness of creation, the full deity and true humanity of Jesus Christ, and salvation by faith in His finished work rather than by secret knowledge.
The word “Gnosticism” comes from the Greek gnosis, meaning knowledge. While full-blown Gnostic systems developed in the second century, the New Testament already confronts ideas that would later crystallize into Gnosticism: the denial of Christ’s true humanity, the elevation of secret knowledge over the apostolic gospel, the rejection of the body, and the claim that the material world is inherently evil. Teachers influenced by these ideas troubled the churches in Colossae, Ephesus, and elsewhere. John writes that every spirit that does not confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh is not from God. Paul warns against hollow and deceptive philosophy and against those who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created. Peter and Jude confront false teachers who despise authority and indulge the flesh while claiming spiritual superiority. The biblical response is clear: the world was created good by the one true God; the Word became flesh; salvation is by grace through faith in the crucified and risen Christ; and the same body that is sown perishable will be raised imperishable.

Gnosticism promises salvation through secret knowledge and treats the material world as a mistake or a prison. The Bible answers with a public gospel and a good creation. The Word became flesh. The Son of God truly suffered, truly died, and truly rose in a physical body. Salvation is not found in hidden insight for the elite but in the finished work of Christ offered to all who believe. Everything created by God is good. The body will be raised. Hold fast to the Head. Guard the good deposit. Test the spirits. The true knowledge of God is found in the face of Jesus Christ — the One who came in the flesh, died for sinners, and will return in the same body in which He ascended. That is the gospel. That is enough.
