Assurance of Forgiveness is the God-given confidence that the sins you have confessed are actually put away.
If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
As far as the east is from the west,
so far does He remove our transgressions from us.
It is not a mood you work up.
It is trust in the character of the One who promised,
and in the blood that sealed the promise.
David hid his sin and his bones wasted away. When he acknowledged it, he said, You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
John writes to believers so that they will not sin, and if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation. Confession is not informing God. It is agreeing with Him and taking the way He opened. Faithful and just are the grounds. He is faithful to His word. He is just because the debt was paid. A conscience can refuse that news and keep prosecuting a closed case. Another conscience can presume and never confess. Assurance lives between those two ditches.
The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin as we walk in the light.
Hebrews says we draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, sprinkled clean. The enemy accuses. The record was nailed to the cross.
Assurance is not the claim that you never sinned.
It is the claim that the Judge has spoken,
and His Son is the Advocate who already stood in your place.
- Forgiveness rests on God’s faithfulness and justice, not on the heat of your tears.
- Confess and cleanse belong together. He does both.
- East and west do not meet. That is how far He removes what you named.
- An Advocate means the court is not empty and the case is not yours to retry.
- Lack of feeling is not always lack of pardon. Unconfessed darkness is not assurance.
- Full assurance of faith draws near. It does not wait in the porch hoping the veil is still torn.
- Blessed is the one whose sin is covered. Blessing is the right word, not maybe.
- Promise – Faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse.
- Covering – Sin put out of sight by His act, not yours.
- Removal – As far as east from west; cast into the depths.
- Advocate – Jesus Christ the righteous at the Father’s side.
- Sprinkled Heart – Conscience made clean to draw near.
- Walk in the Light – Fellowship and ongoing cleansing.
- No Condemnation – The verdict for those in Christ Jesus.
- 1 John 1:7-9 – “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
- 1 John 2:1-2 – “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”
