Conformity vs. Transformation is the fork Paul sets after eleven chapters of mercy.
Do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.
One is the press of the age.
The other is the work of God in a living sacrifice.
The difference is not taste.
It is whether the mind is stamped by the present world or remade to test and approve the will of God.
Romans 12 begins with bodies presented as a living sacrifice. Then it names the danger and the gift. This world—this age—has a mold. It squeezes people into its pattern of pride, appetite, and fear until they think the mold is nature. Do not be conformed. The verb is passive: do not let yourselves be pressed. Then the opposite: be transformed. The word is the one used of Jesus on the mountain when His face shone. Here it happens by the renewal of the mind. A new way of seeing becomes a new way of living. Testing follows. The will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect—is discerned in the doing, not as a slogan. Conformity can wear religious clothes. Israel had a zeal without knowledge and sought to establish its own righteousness. The Pharisees honored God with lips while the heart stayed far. Transformation is not a costume change. It is the Spirit’s remaking of thought until the body on the altar stays there on Monday. The world is passing. The mind that copies it will pass with it. The mind that is renewed learns to love what God loves.

- The battlefield is the mind. The fruit shows in the body.
- Mercy is the reason for both commands. Therefore, by the mercies of God.
- You cannot keep the world’s pattern and call it discernment.
- Renewal is ongoing. Transformation is not a single surge of feeling.
- The will of God is good, acceptable, and perfect. The mold of the age is none of those for long.
- Jesus was transfigured in glory. The church is transformed in ordinary obedience.
- The Mold – This age pressing its shape on thought and habit.
- The Refusal – Do not be conformed.
- The Change – Be transformed—metamorphosis by mercy.
- The Means – Renewal of the mind.
- The Test – Discern what is the will of God.
- The Offering – Bodies presented; worship that includes the week.
- The End – A people who are not copies of a passing world.
- Romans 12:1-2 – “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Do not be conformed to this world.
Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.
By the mercies of God present your bodies. That is worship.
The age has a mold. Refuse it. The Spirit has an image: the Son. Receive that.
Beholding the glory of the Lord, we are being transformed from one degree of glory to another.
Put off the old self. Be renewed in the spirit of your minds. Put on the new self.
Test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. The passing world cannot teach you that.
