¶ Gog and Magog
Gog and Magog are the names associated with a final, massive rebellion against God and His people.
In Ezekiel 38–39, Gog of the land of Magog leads a great coalition of nations against restored Israel, only to be decisively destroyed by the Lord.
In Revelation 20, after the thousand years, Satan is released and gathers the nations—Gog and Magog—for a final assault on the camp of the saints and the beloved city, before fire from heaven consumes them.
Both passages reveal that every last rebellion against God will be crushed, and that the Lord alone is the defender of His people.
The prophecy of Ezekiel 38–39 describes a future invasion of the land of Israel by Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, together with a vast alliance of nations from the north and other directions. They come against a people restored from the nations and living securely. God declares that He will put hooks in their jaws and bring them against His land so that the nations may know Him when He shows Himself holy through their destruction. The Lord intervenes with earthquake, pestilence, torrential rain, hailstones, fire, and sulfur; Gog and his hordes fall on the mountains of Israel, and it takes seven months to bury the dead. In Revelation 20 the same names appear at the very end of history. After the thousand years are ended, Satan is released from his prison and goes out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the sea. They surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire comes down from heaven and consumes them. Satan is then thrown into the lake of fire. In both visions the message is the same: the final enemies of God and His people will be utterly defeated by divine intervention, and the Lord’s name will be vindicated before all the earth.

Gog and Magog stand for the final, worldwide defiance of God. Whether in the vision of Ezekiel or at the close of the thousand years in Revelation, the pattern is the same: a vast coalition rises against the people of God, yet the Lord Himself intervenes and destroys them. No number like the sand of the sea can prevail. Fire from heaven ends the rebellion, and the devil is thrown into the lake of fire. The purpose is that the nations may know that He is the Lord and that His name may be sanctified. Therefore do not fear the gathering of the nations. The same God who put hooks in the jaws of Gog will defend His people to the end. The final enemy will fall, the beloved city will stand, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
