The Crown of Glory is the honor the Chief Shepherd will give when He appears.
Peter told the elders to shepherd the flock willingly, not for shameful gain, and promised that when the Chief Shepherd appears they will receive the unfading crown of glory.
Gray hair is a crown of glory when it is found in the way of righteousness.
The Lord Himself is a crown of glory to the remnant of His people. All such crowns are His gift, not a prize the proud can seize.
In Scripture a crown is more than metal on a brow. It is honor, victory, and the visible share in another’s joy. Isaiah said that in that day the Lord of hosts would be a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the remnant of His people. He also said Zion would be a crown of beauty in the Lord’s hand. Proverbs called gray hair a crown of glory when it is found in a righteous path. Peter took the image and set it at the appearing of Christ. Elders are to shepherd God’s flock as under-shepherds. When the Chief Shepherd appears, they will receive the unfading crown of glory. Paul spoke of other crowns—the crown of righteousness for those who love His appearing, the crown of life for those who remain steadfast under trial, an imperishable wreath for those who run to win. James and John join the same hope. No crown in the New Testament is a second salvation. Each is the Lord’s “well done” made visible. The twenty-four elders cast their crowns before the throne, because the glory was never theirs to keep.
