The Crown of Rejoicing is the people who will stand with the servant of Christ at His coming.
Paul asked the Thessalonians what his hope or joy or crown of boasting would be before the Lord Jesus at His coming.
Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.
This crown is not metal. It is lives the gospel has gathered, presented with joy when the Lord appears.
Paul labored in Thessalonica with a father’s and a mother’s heart. He preached the gospel, suffered for it, and then was torn away. He sent Timothy to see how their faith stood. When the report came back that they were standing firm, he overflowed with thanks. In that overflow he named them his hope, his joy, and his crown of boasting before the Lord Jesus at His coming. The King James phrase “crown of rejoicing” is that crown of boasting and joy. He used the same language of the Philippians: my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown. The picture is the games and the royal court together. A victor receives a wreath. A king receives honor. Paul said the wreath he wanted, the honor he would hold up, was not his own name but the people Christ had saved through the word he preached. At the parousia the work will be seen. Converts will be present. Laborers will rejoice together. The crown is shared joy in other people’s salvation, not a private prize.

People are the crown. Lives held fast in the Lord are the wreath.
Preach the gospel. Share your own self. Watch over souls so that you may do it with joy.
Stand firm in the Lord, beloved. Do not let the labor be in vain.
Sower and reaper will rejoice together. Heaven already rejoices over one sinner who repents.
When the Lord appears, the sheaves will be there.
Cast even this crown before the throne. The joy was always His.
