Watchfulness is the waking life of those who wait for the Lord.
Jesus said, Stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
It is not nervous staring at the sky.
It is a heart that stays sober, a lamp that stays lit, and a servant found doing the Master’s work when He knocks.
On the Mount of Olives Jesus moved from signs to a charge. Concerning that day and hour no one knows. Therefore stay awake. If the master of the house had known the hour, he would not have let his house be broken into. The faithful and wise servant is the one the Master finds giving the household food at the proper time. The ten virgins all sleep, but only those with oil are ready when the cry sounds at midnight. Mark records the same command with a traveling master and servants left in charge: stay awake, for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning. Paul told the church they were not in darkness for that day to surprise them like a thief. So then let us not sleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. Watchfulness in Scripture is therefore hope with its eyes open. It refuses both panic and sleep. It keeps the lamp trimmed because the Bridegroom is real and His hour is sure.
