¶ Jesus Names and Titles
The names and titles of
Jesus in Scripture reveal
His divine identity, mission, character,
and relationship to God and humanity.
Each name and title of Jesus highlights a different aspect of who He is and what He came to do.
Together they paint a complete picture of the Messiah — fully God and fully man — who saves, rules, and redeems.
- Jesus’ names often point back to Old Testament promises and forward to His work on the cross and return.
- Many titles emphasize His authority, humility, and sacrificial love.
- Understanding these names helps believers know Jesus more deeply and worship Him more accurately.

¶ Major Names and Titles
- Jesus (Yeshua) — “The Lord saves” or “God is salvation.” His personal name, given by the angel (Matthew 1:21).
- Christ / Messiah — “Anointed One.” The promised King and Deliverer.
- Son of God — Declares His divine nature and unique relationship with the Father (John 3:16, Matthew 16:16).
- Son of Man — Jesus’ favorite self-description; emphasizes His humanity and role as the coming Judge (Daniel 7:13–14).
- Son of David — the promised descendant of King David who inherits the everlasting throne and fulfills the Davidic covenant
- Lord (Kyrios) — A title of deity and authority, used over 700 times in the New Testament.
- Savior — Highlights His mission to rescue people from sin (Luke 2:11, Titus 2:13).
- Lamb of God — Points to His sacrificial death as the perfect substitute (John 1:29, Revelation 5:6).
- King of Kings and Lord of Lords — Declares His ultimate sovereignty (Revelation 19:16).
- Alpha and Omega — The beginning and the end; eternal and sovereign (Revelation 1:8, 22:13).
- Good Shepherd — Shows His care, guidance, and willingness to lay down His life (John 10:11).
- Light of the World — Brings truth, life, and salvation to a dark world (John 8:12).
- Bread of Life — The source of spiritual nourishment and eternal life (John 6:35).
- The True “Shiloh” — the One in whom God’s presence rests and to whom the nations will come
- The Living Word — the eternal Word of God who became flesh
- Lion of the Tribe of Judah — the powerful, royal, and conquering descendant of Judah who alone is worthy to open the scroll of God’s purposes.
- Firstfruits — Firstfruits are the earliest portion of the harvest offered to God
- Immanuel — a Hebrew name meaning “God with us.”
- King of Israel — a Messianic title rooted in the covenant with David.
- King of the Jews — The royal title first used by the Magi
- Prince of Peace — declares that Jesus Christ is the royal ruler whose reign brings true and lasting peace
- Redeemer — describing the One who rescues His people from bondage by the payment of a price.
- Savior — “one who delivers, rescues, or saves.”
- Matthew 1:21 — The angel announces the name “Jesus” and its meaning.
- John 1:1, 14 — “The Word was God” and became flesh.
- Philippians 2:9–11 — God gave Jesus “the name that is above every name.”
- Revelation 19:11–16 — The majestic titles at His return.
- Colossians 1:15–20 — A rich summary of who Jesus is.
- Revelation 5:5 — the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David
Many of these names were prophesied in the Old Testament and fulfilled in Jesus. Studying them is a powerful way to grow in both knowledge and worship.
