New Wine in Old Wineskins is the saying of Jesus about wine that is still working and skins that are already set.
No one puts new wine into old wineskins.
If he does, the wine will burst the skins—
and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins.
New wine is put into fresh wineskins,
and both are preserved.
Luke adds the last honesty:
no one after drinking old wine wants new,
for he says, The old is good.
The question was fasting. John’s disciples and the Pharisees fasted. Jesus’ disciples did not. He spoke of the Bridegroom first, then of cloth, then of skins. New wine is alive. It ferments. It swells. Old skins have already stretched and dried. They cannot take another swelling. Pour the new into them and you lose the wine and the container. Fresh skins can live with the work of the wine.
The picture is the same as the patch, aimed at a different household object. The kingdom arriving in Jesus will not sit inside a closed system of extra fasts, fences, and inherited pride as if He were a better vintage of the same cellar.
- The Law is not the enemy. He came to fulfill it.
- The skins in view are the forms that cannot bear the life of the Spirit and the new covenant written on the heart.
- Pentecost will look like new wine to mockers. Peter will say they are not drunk as you suppose.
The last line in Luke is pastoral and severe. People prefer what they already taste. The old feels good because the mouth knows it.
- That preference can refuse the Bridegroom while praising the cellar.
Both are preserved only when the wine and the skins match.
Force the mix and you keep neither.
- New wine needs a vessel that can still stretch.
- Burst skins are not a small spill. Wine and container both die.
- “The old is good” can be a toast that refuses the kingdom.
- Fresh skins preserve both. The aim is not destruction of every old thing. It is a fit.
- The Bridegroom, the cloth, and the wine are one answer to one complaint about fasting.
- Fulfillment is new covenant life, not a pour-over of Jesus on unchanged pride.
- Mockers will call the Spirit new wine. They will not be entirely wrong about the newness.
- New Wine – Living, working, still expanding.
- Old Skins – Set, brittle, already used to capacity.
- Burst and Loss – Both the gift and the vessel ruined.
- Fresh Skins – A people and a covenant able to hold the life.
- Both Preserved – The right pairing saves wine and skin.

Do not pour the living Christ into a skin that will not stretch. Do not call the familiar good in order to refuse the new. Put the wine where it can live. Both are preserved.
