The Prince of the Power of the Air is Paul’s name for the spirit now at work in the sons of disobedience.
Those who were dead in trespasses once walked according to the course of this world and followed him.
The title places his influence in the unseen realm that presses on earthly life.
It does not make him lord of the sky. It names a rebel prince whose work is unbelief, and whose people have been made alive with Christ.
Ephesians opens the Christian life by telling the truth about what it replaced. You were dead. You walked in trespasses.
- That walk had a pattern: the age of this world. It had a prince: the prince of the power of the air. It had an inward engine: the spirit now at work in the sons of disobedience. Air here is not weather. It is the atmosphere of the present evil age—the unseen sphere in which that prince operates, close enough to shape desires, close enough to be called at work in those who refuse God.
The same letter will seat Christ far above all rule and authority, raise the saints with Him in the heavenly places, and then send them to wrestle not against flesh and blood. Between those poles sits this prince. He is the spirit behind the old walk. Mercy interrupted him. God, being rich in mercy, made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved.
The prince still works in the disobedient. He does not hold the keys of those who have been seated with the Son.

- “Air” names his sphere of operation, not ownership of creation.
- He works in the sons of disobedience; he is not a distant rumor.
- Dead people do not climb out of his course. God makes them alive.
- Christ is seated far above every power this prince can claim.

- Still Resisted – The church puts on armor because the air is not empty.
- Ephesians 2:1-3 – “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”
- Ephesians 2:4-6 – “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

You have been raised and seated with Christ, far above every name that is named.
Stand. The air is not empty. The throne above it is not vacant.
By grace you have been saved.
