Overcoming the World is the victory that belongs to those who are born of God.

esus said, Take heart; I have overcome the world.
John writes so that believers will know they have eternal life, and so that they will not treat the world as the stronger party. The world lies in the evil one. It hates those who are not of it. It is passing away with its desires. Against that world the new birth is already a conquest. Faith is not a feeling that tries harder than despair. Faith is trust that Jesus is the Son of God, the One who entered the world, was lifted up, and said the ruler of this world is judged. He told the disciples they would have tribulation in the world. Then He said He had overcome it. The letters take that sentence and put it on the children: you have overcome the evil one; you have overcome them, for He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. Revelation uses the same verb for the churches: the one who conquers will eat of the tree of life, will not be hurt by the second death, will be a pillar, will sit with Christ on His throne, as He conquered and sat with His Father. Overcoming the world is therefore not escape from trouble. It is remaining in the Son while the world does its worst, and finding that the world cannot keep its last word.
