¶ Sheep and Goats
Sheep and Goats is the picture Jesus gave of the last separation.
When the Son of Man comes in His glory, He will sit on His glorious throne, and all the nations will be gathered before Him.
He will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
The sheep inherit the kingdom.
The goats go away into eternal punishment.
The difference is made known in how they treated the least of His brothers.
Near the end of the Olivet teaching Jesus described the day of His glory. All the nations stand before the King. He sets the sheep on His right and the goats on His left. To those on the right He says, Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. He names hunger, thirst, strangerhood, nakedness, sickness, and prison, and He says that what they did for the least of these His brothers they did for Him. Those on the left hear, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. They also met the hungry and the sick, and they did nothing. They ask when they saw Him. He answers with the same measure: as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. The scene is not a second gospel of works that replaces the cross. It is the public unveiling of living faith and of its absence. The King’s brothers are His people. Love for Him takes form in mercy toward them. The verdict is as lasting as the life and the punishment He names.
- The Judge is the Son of Man in glory, not an impersonal scale.
- The separation is personal and final: right hand and left hand.
- Sheep and goats looked alike in the field; the King knows the difference.
- Mercy to Christ’s brothers is treated as mercy to Christ Himself.
- Both groups are surprised. Neither lived before an audience of one for show.
- The fire was prepared for the devil and his angels; people enter it by remaining with that rebellion.
- Eternal life and eternal punishment stand in the same sentence. Jesus meant both.
¶ Key Aspects of the Sheep and the Goats
- Glorious Throne – The coming King sits to judge the nations.
- Two Flocks – One shepherd, two destinies.
- The Least of These My Brothers – The hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, and imprisoned among His people.
- Done unto Me – Union with Christ makes kindness to His own kindness to Him.
- Inherit the Kingdom – Prepared from the foundation of the world for those blessed by the Father.
- Depart from Me – The most terrible words a human being can hear.
- Eternal Outcomes – Life and punishment that do not expire.
- Matthew 25:31-33 – “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.”
- Matthew 25:34-36 – “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’”

When the Son of Man comes in His glory, He will separate the sheep from the goats.
Come, you who are blessed by My Father. Depart from Me, you cursed.
What you did to the least of His brothers you did to Him. What you refused them you refused Him.
This is not a ladder of good deeds to climb past the cross. It is the fruit that living faith bears when the King is loved.
Inherit the kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world.
Do not close your heart against a brother in need.
The Good Shepherd knows His sheep. Be found among them, doing the will of the Father, until He sits on His glorious throne.
