Sacrifice is a life or gift offered to God in worship, atonement, thanksgiving, or dedication.
From Abel’s flock to the altar in the temple, blood spoke because life is in the blood.
Those offerings could not take away sins. They pointed to the One who would.
Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
The church now offers praise, good works, and living bodies through Him.
The first chapters of Scripture already show offering. Abel brought of the firstborn of his flock, and the Lord had regard for his gift. After the flood Noah built an altar, and the Lord smelled a pleasing aroma. Abraham was told to offer Isaac and received him back, a parable of the greater Son. At Sinai God appointed burnt offerings, grain offerings, peace offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings. Morning and evening a lamb was slain. Once a year the high priest took blood behind the veil. The letter to the Hebrews says it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Every priest stood daily, repeating what never finished the work. Then Christ appeared. He offered Himself once for all. He sat down. The veil tore. Sacrifice in the new covenant is not a second killing of the Son. It is His finished offering remembered, preached, and answered by a people who present themselves and the fruit of their lips. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. With His blood there is eternal redemption.

- Philippians 4:18 – “I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.”
- Mark 12:33 – “And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
- Micah 6:6-8 – “With what shall I come before the Lord…? He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
The blood of bulls and goats could not take away sins. Christ put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
He offered one sacrifice for sins and sat down.
Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering.
Present your bodies. Offer praise. Do good. Share what you have.
Do not look for another offering for sin. The Lamb has been sacrificed.
The Lord will provide. He has provided. Draw near by that blood, and live as a sacrifice that still breathes.
