Children of Light are those who belong to the day because they belong to Christ.
Jesus said, While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.
Paul said, At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
The name is identity first, then walk. You do not shine your way into the family. You walk because you have been called out of the dark.
Night and day in the gospel are not only clocks. They are two births. Those who love darkness hate the light because their works are evil.
Those who believe in the light become children of light.
The change is so complete that Paul will not only say they were in darkness. He says they were darkness. Now they are light in the Lord.
The fruit of that light is all that is good and right and true.
Thessalonians adds the same census: you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. Therefore do not sleep. Keep awake. Put on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet of the hope of salvation.
The world still lies in the present darkness. The family does not. Their Father is the Father of lights. Their Lord is the light of the world. Their city will have no night. Until then they walk as what they are, expose the unfruitful works of darkness, and refuse to put the old night-clothes back on.
