Mark is John Mark, the young man from Jerusalem who wrote the second Gospel.
His mother’s house held a prayer meeting the night Peter came from prison.
He left Paul and Barnabas on the first journey, split the team later, and was useful to Paul at the end.
Peter called him my son.
The church received his book as
the voice of a servant who had failed, returned,
and told the story of the Servant who did not fail.
The church in Jerusalem met in the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark. When Peter was freed, he went there. That is the first room we can see. Barnabas, Mark’s cousin, took him to Antioch and then to Cyprus. In Pamphylia Mark turned back. Paul judged the desertion hard enough that he would not take him the second time. Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus.
Years later the wound is closed. Paul tells the Colossians to welcome him. He tells Timothy to get Mark and bring him, for he is useful to me for ministry. Peter, writing from Babylon, sends greeting from Mark, my son. Papias and the early church said Mark wrote what Peter preached. The Gospel that bears his name moves fast, calls Jesus the Son of God in the first line, and does not hide frightened disciples—or a young man who fled naked from Gethsemane. Whether that figure is Mark himself, the book still sounds like a man who knew flight and then learned to stand. Desertion is in the record. Usefulness is the last word Paul gives him. The Gospel according to Mark is how that life still serves the church.
