The Second Heaven is a teaching name for the unseen mid-heaven between the sky we see and the third heaven Paul was caught up to.
Scripture says “heavens” in the plural and names a third heaven.
It never writes the words “second heaven” as a title.
Teachers use the phrase for the realm of sun, moon, stars, and of spiritual conflict that Daniel and Paul describe above the earth and beneath the throne of God.
The Bible speaks of heaven as more than one thing.
- Birds fly in the heavens.
- God set lights in the expanse to rule the day and the night.
- The heavens declare the glory of God.
- Paul knew a man in Christ caught up to the third heaven, to Paradise.
- If there is a third, many have reasoned, there is an order: the first heaven of clouds and birds, the third of God’s immediate presence, and between them a second—the celestial and unseen field where stars run and where princes of Persia and Greece withstand holy messengers.
Ephesians places the wrestling of the church against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places, and calls Satan the prince of the power of the air.
Revelation sees an eagle flying in midheaven with an announcement to the earth.
The phrase is a map, not a verse.
- Used well, it keeps believers from flattening all “heaven” into one blur.
- Used badly, it becomes a ladder of speculation that Scripture does not climb. The point is not to name floors.
The point is that creation is layered,
Christ is above every name,
and the air is not empty.
- “Second heaven” is inferred from “third heaven” and from the plural heavens. It is not a heading in the text.
- First heaven in this scheme is the atmosphere; third heaven is Paradise; second is the mid-realm of lights and unseen powers.
- Daniel 10 and Ephesians 6 are the passages that give the idea its pastoral weight.
- Stars and angels are both associated with the heavens; they are not the same thing.
- Christ passed through the heavens and sat down far above all rule.
- Maps of the unseen must stay under the Word, or they become a second mysticism.
- The church’s hope is not to occupy a middle heaven. It is to be with the Lord.

- Under Christ – He is seated far above every name that is named.
- 2 Corinthians 12:2-4 – “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into paradise… and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.”
- Genesis 1:6-8, 14-17 – God made the expanse and called it Heaven; He made lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate day from night and to be for signs and for seasons.
- Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
- Psalm 115:16 – “The heavens are the Lord’s heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.”
- Deuteronomy 10:14 – “Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.”
- 1 Kings 8:27 – “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you…”
- Nehemiah 9:6 – “You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it…”
- Daniel 10:13, 20-21 – The prince of Persia withstood the messenger; Michael came; the prince of Greece would come.
- Ephesians 2:2 – “…following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.”
- Ephesians 6:12 – “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
- Ephesians 1:20-21 – God seated Christ “at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion.”
- Hebrews 4:14 – “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.”
- Hebrews 7:26 – “For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.”
- Revelation 8:13 – “Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, ‘Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth…’”
- Revelation 14:6 – “Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth…”
- Job 38:7 – “…when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy.”
- Isaiah 14:12-13 – The fallen one said in his heart, “I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high.”
- Matthew 24:29 – “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”
Paul was caught up to the third heaven. Scripture does not label a “second.”
The phrase is a help for reading the heavens in order: sky, mid-realm, the presence of God.
Do not build a religion of floors. The lights were made for signs. The air has a rebel prince. The Son has passed through the heavens and sat down.
Wrestle as those seated with Christ, not as tourists of the middle sky.
Heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord.
Look to the things that are unseen and eternal. The third heaven is Paradise. The King above every name is enough.
