Wisdom is the skill of living before God in the fear of the Lord.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
Christ Jesus became to us wisdom from God.
It is not cleverness.
It is light for the path,
given to those who ask,
and it looks like peace,
not like a sharp tongue.
Proverbs personifies Wisdom crying in the street, calling simple people to turn.
Job asked where she is found and heard that God understands her way.
Moses told Israel that their statutes would be their wisdom in the sight of the nations.
Daniel’s God gives wisdom to the wise and reveals mysteries.
James told the church that if anyone lacks wisdom he should ask God, who gives generously without reproach—and then he sorted two wisdoms.
- The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits.
- Bitter jealousy and selfish ambition are earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
Paul went further. Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified. Among the mature he does impart a wisdom of God, hidden, decreed before the ages, revealed by the Spirit.
In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
- So biblical wisdom starts in reverence, walks in the Word, asks in faith, and ends in a Person.
A head full of maxims
without the fear of the Lord
is only a faster way to fall.
- Beginning is fear of the Lord. There is no side door for the proud.
- Wisdom is given. Ask. He does not reproach the asker.
- Two wisdoms exist. Fruit tells them apart.
- Christ crucified looks like folly and is the wisdom of God.
- Treasures of wisdom are hidden in Him, not in a second vault.
- Peaceable and gentle is not weakness. It is the shape from above.
- Hearing Proverbs and refusing the cross is unfinished hearing.
