Ask is the first word of Jesus’ three-beat command.
Ask, and it will be given to you;
seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives.
You do not have, because you do not ask.
You ask and do not receive,
because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
Ask in His name.
Ask in faith.
Ask as children of a Father who knows how to give.
Prayer in Scripture is not a performance for the air. It is asking. Solomon asked for a listening heart and received more than he named. Hannah asked for a son. The psalms ask from the pit and from the throne.
- Jesus put Ask at the head of the line, then Seek, then Knock—need spoken, good hunted, a door pressed. He argued from fathers who will not hand a snake when a child asks for fish. How much more your Father.
- Luke names the gift: the Holy Spirit.
- John names the way: whatever you ask in My name.
- James names two failures: not asking, and asking to spend on passions. He also names the open door for wisdom: ask God, who gives generously and without reproach.
The friend at midnight and the persistent widow teach the same family of verbs. Keep asking. Do not lose heart. Faith is not volume. Faith is confidence that He is and that He rewards those who seek Him. A mute need is still a need. He invites it into speech.
- Ask is commanded, not merely allowed.
- Everyone who asks receives is a promise with a path: name, faith, the Father’s will.
- Not asking is its own unbelief.
- Asking wrongly is asking as if God were a vending box for the flesh.
- In My name is union with the Son, not a tag at the end of a wish.
- Without reproach means He does not shame the poor asker.
- How much more is the engine. Your Father is better than the best earthly giver.
- Spoken Need – Ask; do not only ache.
- In His Name – Asking as those who belong to the Son.
- In Faith – No divided soul that doubts the Giver.
- According to His Will – Confidence that He hears.
- Without Passion-Spending – Motives laid bare.
- Keep Asking – Midnight loaves; a widow’s return.
- The Gift – Wisdom, the Spirit, daily bread, mercy in time of need.
- Matthew 7:7-11 – “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened… If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
- Luke 11:9-13 – Ask, seek, knock; how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.
- James 1:5-6 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting.”
