¶ The Faithful and Wise Servant
The Faithful and Wise Servant is the household manager the Master finds doing his duty when He comes.
Who then is the faithful and wise servant,
whom his master has set over his household,
to give them their food at the proper time?
Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.
The wicked servant says in his heart,
My master is delayed, and begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.
The master will come on a day he does not expect and cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites.
There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus has just said that no one knows the day or the hour, and that the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Then He asks a question that turns the unknown hour into a job. Who is the faithful and wise servant? Not the one with a chart of the hour, but the one the master set over the house to feed the others on time. Blessed is that servant if he is found at that work. The reward is more trust: he will set him over all his possessions.
Luke adds that the servant who knew his master’s will and did not get ready will be beaten with many blows, and the one who did not know with few. To whom much was given, of him much will be required. The dark twin of the story is a heart that uses delay as permission. He beats the people he was told to feed. He sits down with drunkards. Delay in the heart is already unbelief. The coming is sure. The hour is not advertised.
Faithfulness is food given at the proper time—truth, care, and a house that is ready because the steward never clocked out.
