The Fig Tree is Israel’s shade, Israel’s fruit,
and one of Jesus’ sharpest signs.
He cursed a tree full of leaves and found no fruit.
It withered to the root.
He told of a fig tree given one more year,
with the axe still at the soil.
On the Mount of Olives He said,
From the fig tree learn its lesson:
when the branch becomes tender and puts out leaves,
you know that summer is near.
So also,
when you see all these things,
you know that He is near,
at the very gates.
In the land a fig tree meant peace and sweetness. Every man under his vine and under his fig tree was the old picture of rest. The prophets also made the tree a test. The Lord came looking for early figs and found none.
- Micah said there was no cluster to eat, no first-ripe fig that the soul desired.
- Jeremiah saw no figs on the fig tree, even the leaves were withered.
- Into that language Jesus walked.
- Mark says it was not the season for figs, yet the tree advertised itself with leaves. He found nothing but leaves, and said, May no one ever eat fruit from you again. The next morning it was withered. The temple cleansing sits in the same week. Leaves without fruit is religion without repentance.
- Luke tells another fig tree planted in a vineyard. Three years the owner came seeking fruit and found none. Cut it down. The vinedresser asked for one more year of digging and dung. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; if not, cut it down.
- Then in the Olivet Discourse the tree becomes a clock. Tender branch, leaves, summer near. This generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away. His words will not.
The fig tree in Scripture is therefore gift, warning, patience, and sign.
Fruit is what the Owner came to find.

Let it alone this year also. If it should bear fruit next year, well and good; if not, cut it down.
Every man under his vine and under his fig tree—and a Lord who still comes seeking fruit.
Heaven and earth will pass away. His words will not.
Have faith in God. Bear fruit. Watch. He is near.
