The Lost Coin is the second of three lost-and-found stories Jesus told when sinners drew near and the Pharisees grumbled.
What woman, having ten silver coins,
if she loses one,
does not light a lamp,
sweep the house,
and seek diligently until she finds it?
When she has found it,
she calls her friends and neighbors together,
saying,
Rejoice with me,
for I have found the coin that I had lost.
Just so, I tell you,
there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
A coin does not wander. A sheep strays. A son walks off. A drachma falls and lies still in the dark until someone looks. That is why the woman lights a lamp, sweeps, and keeps at it. The coin is still hers. It has not stopped being worth a day’s wage because it rolled under a chest. Heaven’s arithmetic is the same. One of ten matters. The search is not casual. Diligence is the word. When the coin is in her hand again, the house is too small for the joy. Neighbors are called. Angels are named. The point is not the broom. The point is the gladness of God over one sinner who turns.
Tax collectors and sinners were coming near to hear Him. Religious men were muttering that He receives them and eats with them. Jesus answered with a shepherd, a woman, and a father. The lost coin is the middle panel: value that did not change when it was out of sight, and a search that will not stop until the piece is found.
Repentance is the finding from our side.
Joy in heaven is the finding from His.
- Lost does not mean worthless. The coin was still a drachma.
- The woman seeks until she finds. Until is the patience of the search.
- Lamp and broom are ordinary tools. Seeking sinners is not theatrical.
- Friends and neighbors are invited into the joy. Heaven is not stoic.
