The Lost Son is the third lost-and-found story Jesus told when sinners drew near and the Pharisees grumbled.
A younger son asked for his share,
went far,
wasted it,
and came to himself among pigs.
Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.
I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
While he was still a long way off,
his father saw him,
ran,
embraced him,
and kissed him.
This my son was dead,
and is alive again.
He was lost, and is found.
The older brother would not go in.
Luke 15 is one answer in three panels. A sheep is sought. A coin is swept for. A son walks off on two feet and must turn. The father does not chain him to the farm. He divides the living. The far country is real: reckless living, famine, a citizen of that country, pods the pigs ate. Coming to himself is the first mercy in the pigsty. The speech he rehearses is half right: I have sinned; make me a hired hand. He never finishes it. The father is already running. Robe, ring, shoes, the fattened calf—sonship restored before the boy can rewrite the contract. Dead and alive, lost and found: that is the father’s verdict.
The older son comes in from the field and hears music. He is angry. He will not go in. He names his brother “this son of yours.” He counts years of obedience like a wage. Child, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate. The story ends in the yard. Jesus does not say whether the older brother comes in. The Pharisees are still standing there. So is every church that prefers a clean field to a running father.

- Coming to himself is not yet home. The father running is home.
- Hired-hand religion dies in the embrace. The father will not negotiate sonship.
- Dead and alive is stronger language than embarrassed and tired.
