Judgment of Nations is the Lord’s reckoning with peoples, not only with persons.
Joel said He would gather all the nations to the Valley of Jehoshaphat and enter into judgment with them there.
Jesus said when the Son of Man comes in His glory,
all the nations will be gathered before Him,
and He will separate them as a shepherd separates sheep from goats.
Kings and empires rise and fall under His hand.
The last scene is not a committee.
It is the King on His throne.
Scripture never treats nations as if they were outside the story. Babel is judged. Egypt is judged. Babylon is judged.
The Lord roars from Zion and the pastures of the shepherds mourn. He is a God of the whole earth, and He weighs peoples for bloodshed, pride, idolatry, and the way they treat the poor and the people He named.
- Joel’s valley is a courtroom for the nations on account of Israel and on account of their own evil.
- Isaiah sees the nations flowing to the mountain to learn, and also the earth punished for its transgression.
- Jesus takes the last of that line and sets it at His appearing.
- All the nations gathered.
- One Shepherd.

- The surprise in the parable is that the King reads the nations by what they did to His brothers.
- A cup of water is not small when He is in the least of these.
Historical judgments—Assyria, Babylon, Rome—are rehearsals. They prove the world is not a closed system. They do not exhaust the day when the Son of Man sits on His glorious throne. Persons will stand at the great white throne. Nations, in the prophets and in Matthew 25, also stand. The gospel still runs to all nations before the end. Mercy is preached first. Judgment is not canceled.
- Nations are moral agents in Scripture. Policies have a Judge.
- Gathering the nations is both mission and courtroom. The same word “nations” carries both.
- Sheep and goats are separated by the King, not by their own anthem.
- Treatment of “the least of these my brothers” is the revealed test in that scene.

- Matthew 25:31-33, 40, 46 – “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats… ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’… And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
- Joel 3:2, 12-14 – “I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. The gospel is a testimony to the nations first. The throne is not canceled by the testimony.
He shall judge between the nations. The last word is not the rage of the peoples. It is the King on Zion.
