The Homeowner’s Treasure is the last picture in Matthew 13.
Every scribe trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.
Jesus asked if they had understood all these things.
They said yes.
Then He told them what a trained hearer does with the store.
The chapter has been a house of secrets: sower, weeds, mustard seed, leaven, hidden treasure, pearl, net. Jesus turns from the field to the steward.
A scribe in Israel handled the old writings. Trained for the kingdom, that same kind of person becomes a householder with a storeroom.
- He does not throw the old away.
- He does not refuse the new.
He brings both out—Moses and the Prophets beside the words the Son has just spoken. New cloth is not a patch on an old coat, and new wine is not poured into brittle skins. This saying is not that argument again. It is what a faithful steward does after he has understood. The treasure is already his. The work is to serve the household from it.
- Old is the Law and the Prophets that spoke of the King.
- New is the secret now given: the kingdom sown in the world, wheat and weeds together, a net still in the sea, a field bought for joy.
A church that keeps only the old will miss the Son.
- A church that keeps only the new will cut the root that held the promise.
The householder brings out both because both belong to the same Lord.
- Understanding is the door. He asked if they had understood before He gave this charge.
- Trained for the kingdom is more than trained for a library.
- Treasure here is a store already in the house, not a chest still buried in a field.
- New and old are both brought out. Neither is left in the dark.
- The master of a house feeds people. The store is for serving, not for hoarding.
- The scribe who will not receive the new is untrained for the kingdom.
- The hearer who throws away Moses has emptied half the room.
- The Question – Have you understood all these things?
- The Scribe – A handler of Scripture, now trained for the reign of heaven.
- The Householder – Authority in the house to bring things out.
- The Store – Treasure already in his keeping.
- The Old – Law, Prophets, Writings; the field that held the promise.
- The New – Secrets of the kingdom now spoken by the Son.
- The Serving – Brought out for the household, not locked away.
- Matthew 13:51-52 – “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

The old is not scrap. The new is not a toy. Both belong to the same store.
He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, not to empty the room.
Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted the things concerning Himself.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Rightly handle the word of truth.
Do not hoard the store. Do not keep only one shelf. Understand. Then bring out new and old for the house.
